Robert M. Augustine Becomes 2023 President of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

(Rockville, MD) Robert M. Augustine, PhD, CCC-SLP, took office this month as the 2023 President of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as ASHA’s 2023 President,” Augustine said. “I will dedicate myself every day to supporting and advancing the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology, and ASHA members and their work.”

The Senior Vice President Emeritus for the Council of Graduate Schools, Washington, DC, Dr. Augustine leads national and international consultations and projects that advance the quality, diversity, and internationalization of graduate programs. Currently, he is collaborating with national leaders who are focused on transforming the master’s degree educational experience.

As a practitioner, educator, researcher, and administrator, Dr. Augustine has furthered the field of communication sciences and disorders. When he was a speech-language pathologist at the Easterseals Center of Aurora, Illinois, he launched the Center’s first birth-through-three interprofessional program. As Dean of the Graduate School, Research, and International Education at Eastern Illinois University, he launched award-winning initiatives such as the First Choice Graduate Programs and the Integrative Graduate Studies Institute. Augustine’s work prompted multiple invitations for him to present at global summits on graduate education, such as the Strategic Leaders Global Summit in Budapest, Hungary.

Dr. Augustine recently helped author publications focused on establishing international alliances in the professions and strengthening pathways to graduate study for underrepresented groups. These publications include International Alliances in Communication Sciences and Disorders; Master’s Admissions: Transparency, Guidance and Training; Organization and Administration of Graduate Education: A Policy Statement; and Empowering Diversity Leaders: Proceedings of the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate National Forum.

An ASHA Fellow and Trustee for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation. Dr. Augustine has served the ASHA board and has chaired ASHA committees. A former President of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ISHA), he also is an ISHA Fellow and a recipient of the Honors of ISHA.
