CPT Code 92507 Remains in Effect: No Immediate Changes

August 7, 2025

Recent posts on social media have raised confusion and concern about the status of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 92507. Let us be clear: CPT code 92507 is not being deleted, replaced, or changed today—or anytime soon.

What You Need to Know Right Now

92507 remains active and valid. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) should continue reporting CPT code 92507 when billing for individual treatment services related to speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorders.

There are no immediate changes. While proposed revisions are under discussion, any updates to this code will not take effect until at least 2027—if they are approved by the CPT Editorial Panel.

What's Actually Happening

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently published the September CPT Editorial Panel meeting agenda [PDF], which includes proposed revisions to CPT code 92507 (treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorder; individual). These discussions aim to improve the accuracy and specificity of how services are described—not to eliminate the ability to report speech-language pathology services.

The AMA owns the CPT code set, which is maintained by the CPT Editorial Panel. The Editorial Panel systematically reviews and updates CPT codes to reflect current clinical practices and innovations in the field. ASHA supports the work of the Editorial Panel as a member of the CPT Advisory Committee. Key responsibilities of Advisory Committee members include providing advice on procedure coding, assisting in the review and development of coding issues, and educating members on the use of the CPT code set. Why You Haven’t Heard More Details (Yet)

Due to confidentiality requirements [PDF] associated with the AMA’s code application process, the outcome of the Editorial Panel’s deliberations cannot be shared until the AMA publicly releases them.

What Happens If Code Changes Are Approved?

If the code changes are finalized by the AMA:

  • ASHA will lead a comprehensive education campaign for SLPs, payers, and the public on the changes.
  • You’ll receive clear guidance on how to bill appropriately under any new code structure.
  • ASHA will provide training resources to ensure smooth implementation once the changes are made public.
