Artificial intelligence—or AI—is a rapidly changing technology that is becoming more widely used in education and health care.
Generative AI—a series of systems that draft text, synthesize speech, create images, or summarize data—is one of the fastest-growing frontiers in education and health care today.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic in education and healthcare. Using technology tools like generative AI might create opportunities to innovate and improve efficiency in daily practice. However, awareness of limitations and potential risks are critical when exploring these tools.
ASHA-certified professionals have an ethical responsibility under Principle II of the ASHA Code of Ethics to consider and evaluate any technology that they use in their work or research. Many clinicians and researchers are already experimenting with and using this technology in practice in a variety of ways. AI cannot replace the audiologist, speech-language pathologist, or assistant but could innovate personal and client-centered care when carefully considered.
It is important to note that there is limited legislative or regulatory oversight of these mechanisms at this time, so one must exercise caution when utilizing them in their practice. Some states have begun drafting and implementing policies in an attempt to provide this oversight. America’s AI Action Plan [PDF], released in 2025, will impact health care.
Like all new areas of public policy, these laws and regulations will need testing and adjustment before they will be considered effective in protecting patients and providers.
ASHA encourages professionals to focus on creating individualized treatment plans for clients or students while embracing innovations that are clinically effective. Any claims about the efficacy of an AI tool must be substantiated with evidence.
