Speech-Language Pathology ICD-10-CM Code Changes for 2026

The following new and revised ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification) codes are effective October 1, 2025, for fiscal year (FY) 2026. ICD-10-CM codes are updated annually. For past updates, see speech-language pathology ICD-10-CM code changes for 2025 and 2024.

Note: Always check with payers regarding coverage of new or revised ICD-10-CM codes. Coding changes may not always alter payer coverage decisions for specific conditions.

Summary of Changes

The 2026 ICD-10-CM includes new codes related to primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS). Other updates of interest include new codes related to multiple sclerosis and genetic disorders, as well as revisions to the descriptions for codes related to fracture of other parts of neck (S12.8) and abnormal findings of neonatal hearing screening (P09.6).

  • SLPs typically do not assign the codes from the G- series. However, SLPs may assign G31.87 when SLP is the first professional to diagnosis PPAOS.
  • SLPs may report G31.87 as the medical and the treating diagnosis when applicable.
  • SLPs may also use this updated ICD-10-CM code to provide additional details regarding an underlying or coexisting condition to the speech, language cognitive, swallowing, or voice disorder.
  • Consult the medical record or referring physician when necessary for additional information on relevant diagnoses before reporting G31.87 as the medical diagnosis in addition to the treating diagnosis on the claim.
